Staples has staged Le nozze di Figaro, Così fan tutte, Cenerentola and La bohème in London, at the Jordan Music Festiavl, Musique Cordiale in Provence and the Menton Festival. His celebrated semi-staging of Die Zauberflöte for the Lucerne Festival, conducted by Daniel Harding culminated in a full staging in Stockholm’s Drottningholm Palace Theatre with the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra.
With Kiez Oper in Berlin, he created a site specific production of Dido and Aeneas at the techno club Wilde Renate, which later transferred to Wilderness Festival, and a new narrative piece called Insanity in a dry swimming-pool inside Berlin's Stattbad club in Wedding. In a co-production with La Nuova Musica for the Spitalfields Festival he created a production called Sacrifices based on Carissimi's Jeptha and Charpentier's Sacrificium Abrahae. He created a new production for the Choir of London called Blessed Cecilia based on Britten and Auden's Hymn to St Cecilia which toured the West Bank and Jordan. The work involved the interweaving of the music of Britten and depositions from Palestinian detainees.
In collaboration with creative partner Sophie Hunter he co-created a production called Lucretia in New York and co-directed and conducted a production of Britten’s Phaedra at the Enniskillen International Beckett Festival in 2015. Further collaborations with Hunter include a production of The Turn of the Screw with Aurora Orchestra in the Snape Maltings and LSO St Luke's in London.
